General:
Perennial herb from a stout branching rhizome; stems robust, erect, 30-100 cm tall, sticky-soft-hairy.
Leaves:
Opposite, unstalked, usually clasping-based, lanceolate to egg-shaped or elliptic, 3-7 cm long, irregularly toothed to nearly entire, palmately 3- to 5-veined from the base, sticky-hairy; lowermost leaves much reduced.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a loose terminal cluster of several, long-stalked flowers in the axils of the upper leaves, the stalks 3-10 cm long; corollas pink-purple to rose-red with yellow markings, tubular, 3-5.5 cm long, weakly 2-lipped, the lips spreading, the upper lip 2-lobed, the lower 3-lobed and with 2 yellow-hairy ridges within; calyces narrowly bell-shaped, 1.5-3 cm long, glandular-hairy, 5-toothed, the teeth triangular and more or less equal; stamens 4, the filaments smooth, the anthers long-hairy on the back.
Fruits:
Capsules, narrowly oblong, long-pointed, 13-16 mm long; seeds numerous, about 0.7 mm long.
